Wegovy
Wegovy dosing schedule: from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg
5 min read · Updated August 2026 · Reviewed by the Miva clinical team
Wegovy is a once-weekly injection with a fixed escalation schedule. Starting low and increasing slowly is what makes the medication tolerable for most people.
The standard schedule
| Weeks | Dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | 0.25 mg once weekly | Starting dose — for tolerance, not weight loss |
| 5–8 | 0.5 mg once weekly | Escalation |
| 9–12 | 1 mg once weekly | Escalation |
| 13–16 | 1.7 mg once weekly | Escalation |
| 17+ | 2.4 mg once weekly | Maintenance dose |
If a step up is too much
Escalation can be delayed by four weeks if side effects are difficult, and some people stay on 1.7 mg long term if it's working well. Your clinician makes that call with you at review.
How to inject
Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, on the same day each week, with or without food. Rotate the site each time.
- Check the solution is clear and colourless
- Use a new needle for every dose and dispose of it in a sharps container
- Store pens in the fridge at 2–8°C; do not freeze
- Keep the pen cap on to protect from light
Missed doses
If it's been fewer than 5 days since the missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If more than 5 days have passed, skip it and resume on your usual day.
If you've missed more than two consecutive weekly doses, contact your clinician — you may need to restart at a lower dose.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my Wegovy dose by clicks?
Don't. Wegovy pens are supplied as fixed-dose pens for a specific strength — you select the full dose the pen is designed to deliver. Counting clicks to split doses is unsafe and risks under- or over-dosing.
Can I stay on a low dose of Wegovy?
Some people maintain results below 2.4 mg. It's a clinical decision based on your response, side effects and goals — discuss it at your review rather than adjusting on your own.
How long do you take Wegovy for?
It's designed as a long-term treatment. Studies show weight tends to be regained after stopping, so plans usually combine a maintenance dose with nutrition, strength training and ongoing review.
