Understanding side effects
Most side effects are digestive and appear early in treatment or after a dose increase. For most people they settle as the body adjusts.
Digestive side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and indigestion are the most common effects, usually strongest in the first weeks and after each dose increase.
Other common side effects
Headache, dizziness, fatigue and temporary hair thinning linked to rapid weight loss.
Dehydration
Persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration. Sip fluids regularly and tell your prescriber if symptoms are severe.
Less common but serious
Gallbladder problems, pancreatitis and severe allergic reactions are rare. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain with vomiting.

- Adults with a BMI of 27 or above plus a weight-related condition
- People who prefer an oral treatment to injections
- People able to take a tablet on an empty stomach each morning
Who should not take it?
- Under 18 or over 85
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Allergic to semaglutide or any of the tablet ingredients
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or MEN2
- History of pancreatitis or severe gastrointestinal disease
- Currently taking another GLP-1 medicine
How to take and dosage

Treatment starts low and steps up every 4 weeks until you reach the dose that works best for you.

If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time the following day. Do not take two doses on the same day.

- Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Interactions
- Absorption is affected by food, drink and other medicines taken too soon after the tablet
- Insulin and sulfonylureas increase the risk of low blood sugar
- Other GLP-1 medicines should not be combined
- Oral contraception may be less effective while your stomach empties more slowly
When to seek urgent help
- Severe stomach pain that spreads to your back
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe upper abdominal pain with fever
- Signs of a serious allergic reaction
Storage & travel
Store tablets in the original blister pack at room temperature, below 30°C, away from moisture. No refrigeration needed, which makes travel simple.
Stopping, restarting and switching
Before changing your treatment, speak to your prescriber.
Stopping treatment
Oral semaglutide does not cause physical withdrawal, but appetite commonly returns toward pre-treatment levels and some weight regain is common.
Restarting
After a short break you can usually restart on your last tolerated dose. After a longer gap you may need to restart at 3mg and re-titrate.
Switching to an injection
Your prescriber will advise the equivalent injection starting dose and the timing of your first pen after your last tablet.
