About Mounjaro
What is Mounjaro and how does it work?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) comes in a pre-filled pen with four fixed weekly doses. It activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors — dual action that slows stomach emptying, reduces appetite and steadies blood sugar. It works best alongside healthy eating, activity and ongoing clinical support.
How Mounjaro works
By mimicking two gut hormones, Mounjaro reduces hunger between meals, quietens food noise and makes smaller meals feel more satisfying.
How long does it take to work?
Mounjaro starts working from the first dose. Most people notice reduced appetite within a week; visible weight change usually becomes clear around month three.
What results can you expect?
In the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial, participants on maximum tolerated tirzepatide lost an average of 20.2% of body weight versus 13.7% on semaglutide.

Understanding side effects
Most side effects are digestive and appear early in treatment or after a dose increase. For most people they are mild to moderate and settle within the first 20 weeks.
Digestive side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, bloating and burping are the most common effects, usually strongest in the first weeks and after each dose increase.
Other common side effects
Dizziness, low blood pressure, fatigue, injection-site reactions, rash and temporary hair thinning (more closely linked to rapid weight loss than the medicine itself).
Dehydration
Persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, which can affect kidney function. Sip fluids regularly and tell your prescriber if symptoms are severe or prolonged.
Less common but serious
Gallbladder problems, acute pancreatitis, increased heart rate, altered taste and menstrual changes are uncommon. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain with vomiting.
Eligibility
Mounjaro supports weight management alongside healthy eating and regular physical activity. A thorough assessment is the best way to find the treatment that suits you.

- People able to commit to lifestyle changes alongside treatment

- Allergic to tirzepatide or any ingredient in the pen

Results
What the weight loss results associated with Mounjaro can look like. Individual results vary.
What to expect over time
Most people achieve 15–20% weight loss in the first year, with some reaching 20–25% over 1.5–2 years on higher doses. Three-year data shows an average maximum loss of around 23%.
SURMOUNT-1 at 72 weeks
- 16.0% average loss at 5mg
- 21.4% average loss at 10mg
- 22.5% average loss at 15mg
Head-to-head data
In SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide delivered 20.2% mean weight loss compared with 13.7% for semaglutide — roughly 47% more relative weight loss.
Body composition
Roughly three quarters of the weight lost comes from fat mass and one quarter from lean tissue, so maintaining muscle through regular activity matters.
Mounjaro vs Wegovy at a glance
Both are once-weekly injections prescribed for weight loss. They're effective in different ways, and the right choice depends on how your body responds, not just the headline numbers.

Important safety information
Additional monitoring, contraindications, interactions and contraception guidance.
Do not use Mounjaro if you
- Are allergic to tirzepatide or any ingredient in the pen
- Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
- Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Speak to your prescriber first if you have
- A history of pancreatitis
- Severe gastrointestinal disease
- Kidney problems
- Diabetic retinopathy
Contraindications and interactions
- Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides increase the risk of low blood sugar
- Other GLP-1 medicines should not be combined
- Oral HRT absorption may be reduced — a patch or gel may suit better
- Alcohol and some supplements can affect blood sugar and side effects
Mounjaro and contraception
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce absorption of the oral contraceptive pill. Use a barrier or non-oral method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase.
When to seek urgent help
- Severe stomach pain that spreads to your back
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe upper abdominal pain with fever
- Signs of a serious allergic reaction
Not sure how urgent it is?
Call 911 if symptoms are severe or sudden. For urgent but non-life-threatening symptoms, contact your provincial health line (811 in most provinces) or message our clinical team.
Storage & travel
Storing your Mounjaro pen
Store unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C, in the original carton, and do not freeze. Once in use, a pen can be kept below 30°C for up to 30 days.
How we deliver your Mounjaro
Mounjaro is a cold-chain medicine. We ship in validated temperature-controlled packaging with ice packs that hold fridge-safe conditions for at least 48 hours.
Can I travel with Mounjaro?
Yes. Use an insulated travel bag with cool packs and a barrier between the pack and the pen. Carry it in hand luggage — the hold can freeze and damage the medicine.
Prescription letters
You may need a prescription letter for airport security. Contact us and your prescriber will email a PDF copy to print and take with you.
Stopping, restarting and switching
Before changing your treatment, speak to your prescriber. A clear plan gives you the best chance of maintaining your results.
Can you stop suddenly?
Yes — tirzepatide does not cause physical withdrawal, so it is possible to stop without tapering. The medicine leaves your system over a few weeks.
What happens after stopping?
Appetite and cravings commonly return toward pre-treatment levels, and some or all of the weight lost can return. How you stop and how consistent your habits are both matter.
Restarting Mounjaro
- Within 3 weeks — restart on your last dose, or step up if it was well tolerated
- After more than 3 weeks — you may need to restart at 2.5mg and re-titrate
Switching to or from Wegovy
- Leave one week between your last Wegovy dose and your first Mounjaro dose, starting at 2.5mg
- Switching to Wegovy also needs a one-week gap; your prescriber will advise the starting dose
Mounjaro alternatives
Mounjaro is one of several prescription weight loss treatments, and it is not always the right starting point for everyone.
Weight loss injections
- Wegovy — semaglutide, once weekly, widely used with strong trial data
- Saxenda — liraglutide, once daily, a more gradual approach
- Generic liraglutide — the same active ingredient at a lower price point
Weight loss pills
- Wegovy pill — prescription-only oral semaglutide
- Foundayo — once-daily oral treatment
- Orlistat — reduces the amount of fat absorbed from food
